Social Media Policy

My license requires that I follow the Code of Ethics of the American Mental Health Counselors Association (2015).Section I. A.6.h. "Counselors do not engage in virtual relationships with clients as to do so could potentially be a violation of confidentiality" Therefore, I will not knowingly become friends or follow current clients in any format [Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc.] If clients follow my professional blog, I will not follow them back.  Following, liking and/or commenting on social media sites or the blog, website, or Facebook business page does not constitute a therapeutic relationship. It is inappropriate and unacceptable for me to "creep" someone's pages and the reverse (counselor's Facebook page being "creeped")  is also considered inappropriate. I will not establish connections or engage with clients through social media in anyway. Note that I maintain a professional presence for my practice (Helen Wheeler Center for Families). This Facebook presence exists solely to provide information to the public pertaining to my practice and related topics.  

Use of Email, Phone & Text

You may call me at the number listed above. However, I do not conduct therapy sessions via phone call. Also  be aware that I might be unavailable by phone when you call. In addition, my phone messages might be checked by my students and/or staff in addition to me. Please understand the risks to confidentiality that could occur through the use of email and/or text.  If you enter into services with The Center for Families, you will be asked to sign documents acknowledging those risks. Also understand that emails and text messages become part of your client record and subject to the same laws and restrictions governing your file.  Texting is not a secure form of communication, therefore texting of personal information is always discouraged.  The only exception to regular use of email and text messaging utilized by The Center for Families will be for appointment scheduling and reminders; but an internal, secure scheduling system will be utilized.
