What can I expect from counseling? Counseling seeks to help clients change behavior, attitudes, and/or perceptions about themselves, others, and the world around them. During counseling, we seek to stimulate growth. Counselors seek to arouse the belief that help is possible, correct erroneous beliefs about the world, develop competencies in social living, and help clients accept themselves as persons of worth.
Counselors ask: "What is the problem? Should I intervene and try to help you? What could I do to help?"Sometimes, counselors might tell people what to do, but counselors use skillful questioning to help clients resolve their own problems.
In counseling, we attempt to:
teach skills, including social skills
encourage recognition and expression of emotion
give support in times of needs
guide as decisions are made
help clients mobilize inner and environmental resources in times of crises
teach problem solving skills
increase competence and self-actualization
Individuals seeking to enter a counseling relationship can expect to gain some benefits from the process. These benefits often include lessening of unpleasant feelings and/or destructive lifestyle choices. Occasionally during the process of counseling, some of those feelings temporarily increase. That can be considered normal, but if they do not decrease, you are asked to please notify Ms. Wheeler
